Mark Clifton

-Specialist Tomato Grower

Mark grew up in Mangere, Auckland along as one of five brothers. In September of 1974, Mark was a 13 year old schoolboy working in Glasshouses performing any general duties he could get his hands on.

Always knowing that he wanted to be a Tomato grower, Mark left school in 1977 and enrolled in a Cadetship with Auckland Glasshouse Crops Cadet scheme. In 1981 he moved to Palmerston North to complete a Diploma in Vegetable Production.

Mark continued to work in the industry as Horticulture Manager in various companies before becoming self-employed growing Cherry Tomatoes in Massey West, Auckland. In 1987 Mark moved back to Mangere where he spent nine years as Horticulture Manager with Ed Moffat, then 5 years growing Cherry Tomatoes with Cherry Toms Ltd in Papakura.

Mark started with NZ Hothouse in 2000 as a team leader in the Karaka glasshouses, then progressing to a grower at the Ramarama site for three years in 2003. From 2005 Mark was a grower at the Karaka site for Cherry Tomatoes and Small truss and since 2007 has been our grower of Tomatoes in our Bombay site where he is today.

With over 36 years experience in growing Tomatoes, Mark is a vital part of the NZ Hothouse team.

Mark has been married for 25 years and has two wonderful children, one who is studying down in Wellington and one who is still in her college years in Auckland.

As an avid fisherman, Mark spends as much Time out on his boat on the Waitemata Harbor. With a family Bach in Whitianga, Mark has spent the last 26 years holidaying on the Coromandel and taking full advantage of the fishing there too.

Mark also plays indoor bowls for St Anne’s club team, which he has just started up again after having a few years off to spend with his family. Mark has also been highly involved with the Girl Guides through his youngest daughter and for five years managed the Girl Guides Hall in Manurewa.

Mark insists he will stay in the Tomato growing industry till the day he retires, and hopes to retire in Whitianga on the Coromandel.
